Labour relations and working conditions of workers on smallholder cocoa farms in Ghana

Abstract The millions of farm workers in the Global South are an important resource for smallholder producers. However, research on their labour organisation is limited. This article focuses Ghana’s cocoa sector, drawing insights from qualitative interviews and concept bargaining power. We review relations working conditions two historical informally identified supply setups (LSSs) namely, hired Abusa, a form landowner–caretaker relations, identify imbalance horizontal Further, we analyse emerging formal LSS sector: private providers (PLPs). argue that PLPs likely to address power between smallholders bring about significant improvements workers. also assess sustainability potential limitations tensions exist. contribute growing perspective by providing avenues policy related promoting sustained rights agriculture South.
